I Get the News I Need on the Weather Report

In Paul Simon’s song “The Only Living Boy in New York” (It’s an absolutely fantastic song, by the way.) there’s the line, “I can gather all the news I need on the weather report.” Truer words have never been sung. I made the mistake of reading a couple of articles on the January 6th hearings today and I immediately regretted it for a couple reasons.

First, I learned today that criminal referrals from the House of Representatives are virtually meaningless. It turns out the DOJ can simply ignore the referrals if they want to. The press has been breathlessly covering these hearings and it is unlikely they will do anything.

Second, it was further proof that the press will do anything to keep Trump in the news. We’d be better off if we collectively ignored him, but no one seems willing to let that happen. It’s been almost two years since he left office. Despite the constant coverage, we’ve learned exactly nothing new about the man or his actions in that time.

In other words, there nothing new in the news. They just keep rehashing the same old stories. At least the weather changes every day.
