When Everyone Is Wrong…

Wrong Way sign

I don’t write just to write. I hope those of you who read me regularly know that. I try really hard to only write when I have something original to say. Even if it’s tempting to add my voice, if I’m saying what everyone else is saying, I’m just adding to the noise. I try to avoid that. That’s why I sometimes go long stretches without adding anything new here at Nutmegger. It would be better for building an audience if I wrote something every day. That’s how the algorithms work. They reward persistence. But I wouldn’t be satisfied doing things that way.

I’m having a different kind of problem now. I’m hugely tempted to write all the time lately. With the state of the world, I feel like I have to do something, and I don’t know what else I can do. If I did write, I’m pretty sure my thoughts would be original, but now I’m afraid that they wouldn’t be right.

Normally, I’m not that concerned with being right. That might sound strange, but most of my writing is a form of questioning. I’m trying to clarify my own thoughts. I’m searching for something. If I find something true, that’s great, but it’s not why I’m writing. Now, however, I’m feeling real pressure to be right.

Part of that desire to be right comes from the times we’re in. If this little blog is what I can do to try to fight, I’d better be right, right? But the bigger part is that I’m recognizing that everyone with a platform is wrong. If I’m wrong too, that’s just me adding to the noise and I don’t like to do that.

An area where everyone is wrong is all these pop culture litmus tests. Whether it’s Charlie Kirk, Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, Jenny McCarthy, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Joe Rogan, or anyone else, these are just entertainers. They don’t hold elected office or set policy or anything like that. But everyone is acting like whether you find them entertaining or not speaks to the core of your moral being. I’m mostly unfamiliar with all of the ones I listed except Stephen Colbert. I used to watch The Colbert Report back in the day. But I wouldn’t know Bad Bunny if he ate a carrot out of my hand. What does that say about me? Absolutely nothing, but everyone acts like it does.

Another area where everyone is wrong is the Epstein Files. I mean, I don’t know what’s in the Epstein Files and neither do you. We can certainly speculate, but that’s all it is, speculation. It is an open question as to whether the information in the files will take Trump down or not. And it is unlikely that everything Trump does is to distract from the files.

These are just a couple of examples. I’m sure you can think of more.

What am I to do when everyone is wrong? I mean, I’m probably wrong, too, right? Is it worth putting my voice out there? It’s a real conundrum for me.
