Is Nothing Something?

What is nothing? I know it seems obvious. Nothing is the lack of things. It’s right there in the word, no thing. But what is it? The word is a noun, and a noun is a person, place, or thing, so it must be one of those. But it’s not a person or a place and we’ve already established that it’s no thing. So, what is it?

I find the problem frustrating. Nothing is something that exists. When we use the word, there is a referent out in the world. But it’s not a thing. It’s the lack of a thing. Can the lack of a thing be something? I don’t have any idea.
