Supertasting

man tasting the food he is cooking

I’m a supertaster. It’s not as cool as it sounds. Basically, it just means I’m a picky eater. But it’s nice to know I have a real reason for being picky.

My family has always joked that I don’t like flavor. That’s kinda true. In my head I say it’s that I don’t like strong flavors, but it amounts to the same thing. Tasting anything bitter or tart is often overwhelming for me. Sometimes sweet can be overwhelming too. And salt, too. I definitely underseason my food.

What does it look like for me? Well, I love foods like white potatoes, bread, and peanuts. Apples are great. Peas and carrots are good. I don’t touch most other vegetables and fruits. Seafood has a funk that’s impossible for me to get past. I like white meat chicken and turkey. Fattier meats are hard for me. They need to be very well done for me to tolerate them. I guess my family is right. Sometimes I wonder how I get all my nutrients.

I can’t help but wonder how common supertasting is. Sometimes I think all picky eaters are really supertasters. There seems to be a picky eater in every family. Assuming the average family has four people, that could mean that 25% of people are supertasters. It’s nice to think there are that many of us. I feel less alone.

p.s. I was having computer issues, so I wrote this on my phone. I apologize for the lack of development. It’s hard to write on a phone.
