Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Review (Gene’s Take)
Well, I just watched episode one of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and let’s just say it wasn’t my favorite 75 minutes of TV ever. Yes, it was a 75-minute-long episode. That’s a lot, especially for what was essentially a table-setting episode.
Frankly, I don’t have much to say about it. The episode sets up the relationships between Holly Hunter’s Captain Ake, Sandro Rosta’s Cadet Caleb Mir, and Paul Giamatti’s antagonist Nus Braka. It also introduces us to what I imagine will be the core group of characters. They work together to save Cadette Master Lura Thok’s life and free the ship from Nus Braka’s trap.
It is well acted. The characters are likable enough. And the special effects are top notch. It just didn’t connect with me, though. I could nit-pick it to death, but I’m really not interested in doing that. I don’t know. Something was just off about it. Maybe I’m just a grumpy old man.
I’m sure I’ll watch the second episode, and probably the rest of the first season. It’s unfair to judge a series based on its pilot, and Star Trek traditionally gets off to rough starts. But based on what I saw today, I don’t have high hopes.
