A Small Reminiscence

A snowman next to a tree

I just heard “Frosty the Snowman”. It was Ella Fitzgerald’s version. Satisfying as always. But something a little odd happened. The words, “Frosty vir nirvis” floated through my head. I’m not really sure, but I think that’s Frosty the snowman in Latin. Google translate isn’t being very helpful, but that’s neither here nor there.

The words brought back a memory. In high school, I took Latin. During the holiday season, we went to an old folk’s home and sang Christmas carols. The only catch was we sang them in Latin. I don’t remember if we had to translate the songs or if the teacher provided us with the translations. I just remember showing up and singing and, apparently, a small fragment of one of the songs. I don’t even remember what other songs we sang. I’d like to think we did “Adeste Fidelis” since there’s already a famous Latin version, but who knows?

So, do any of my fellow Latin students remember doing anything like this? Does anyone remember enough Latin to check my translation? Now I’m genuinely curious.
