Visitors

My aunt stopped by my house today. She called first to make sure I was home, but I didn’t have time to do any real cleaning. Let’s just say the house didn’t look like I’d like it to look when I have company. There are lots of reasons why I have trouble keeping my house visitor ready. I’ve written about some of them before. (Here and here if you’re curious.) What it comes down to is that I don’t want anyone to see my house in its usual state.

I also don’t keep the basics for entertaining in my house. I only drink water and my kid pretty much only drinks iced tea. So, those are the only two beverages I have to offer. I also don’t keep cakes or cookies or anything handy. I’d make a lousy hobbit.

The thing is, I wish I got more visitors. I’d like to have one of those houses where people I know just stop by because they’re in the neighborhood. I think it would be neat to get a surprise visit from someone. At least I would think it was neat if I weren’t embarrassed by the state of my house.

Maybe what I need is for people to start visiting. Now visitors are rare enough that I’m always pretty certain that I’m not going to get any. If people started showing up, I might be embarrassed the first couple of times, but it would be real incentive to straighten and stock my house. That would be nice to have.
