My daughter asked me, “What’s your favorite part about Christmas?” I told her that my favorite part is watching her open her presents. She said, “Why do you like watching someone else have fun if you’re not having fun yourself?” I told her that it’s hard to explain, but that it’s part of being a parent. I know it’s not solely parents who feel this way, but it is really hard to explain. I have to admit, I sometimes drop the, “It’s part of being a parent,” card when I’m unprepared for a question. It’s kind of like my, “Because I said so.”
I asked her what her favorite part is. She said that it is the night before/when you first wake up on Christmas morning. She likes the excitement that the anticipation brings. That’s a fair answer. I wonder if it will still be true when she reaches the gift-giving stage of life.
